Joint bilingual workshop conference
University of Wolverhampton
16 - 18 September 2009

A workshop conference, sponsored by the British Comparative Literature Association, the Sociedad Española de Literatura General y Comparada and the History & Governance Research Institute, University of Wolverhampton

Call for papers, special session proposals and workshop proposals

(a) Call for papers

Otherness is a perennial source of interest to comparative literature specialists. In recent times literary theory has acquired a variety of dimensions that engage directly or indirectly with otherness, of which the foreign is one specific and important aspect. A similar development has taken place in areas cognate or proximate to literary studies, with the emergence of diaspora and migration studies. A preoccupation with representation of the foreign has therefore become a multi-disciplinary enterprise. In keeping with this, this conference focuses on the representation of foreigners in not only literature and travel writing but also other discourses.
‘Xenographies’ will therefore aim to consider the diversity of forms of representations of foreigners, the concept of the foreign and its related aspects, and the relationship between the representation of foreigners in literature and other discourses as well as in one literature or between several literatures. Proposals for papers from a non-literary discipline perspective that seek to explore connections with literary discourse or that have a clearly comparative dimension will therefore be most welcome.

This conference represents the first collaborative venture between two major European academic associations, the British Comparative Literature Association and the Sociedad Española de Literatura General y Comparada. Proposals for papers in English or Spanish (Castellano) are therefore equally welcome.

Although the following list is not intended to be prescriptive, we welcome papers on such topics as:

The representation of the British in Iberian literatures and the representation of Iberians in British literatures
The representation of foreigners in travel writing
Multilingualism and the foreign in literature and travel writing
The foreigner from literature to film
Literary representation of foreigners explored from the perspective of other disciplines
Linguistic approaches to the representation of foreigners in literature and other discourses
The representation of foreigners in historical discourse, particularly literary representations of foreigners as a historical source

Proposals for 20-minute papers should be submitted by 20 February 2009 in the form of a title plus abstract not exceeding 300 words.

(b) Proposals for special sessions

We also welcome proposals for special sessions. Convenors of special sessions are requested to submit a title and abstracts of three 20-minute papers by 20 February 2009.

(c) Proposals for workshops

We also hope to devote at least one parallel session to a series of discussion workshops on an aspect of the conference theme.

Each workshop will be run by a leader or two co-leaders who will give a short introductory presentation and then lead an intensive group discussion of their chosen texts. These texts might be from any discipline or language community, though we think the success of the workshop will depend on choosing works or excerpts that are also sufficiently brief (Texts will be made electronically available to participants).

If you would like to propose and lead a workshop, please submit by 20 February 2009 a short description of what you would like to accomplish and a preliminary list of discussion materials.

After the selection of leaders, topics will be announced and delegates will be asked to sign up for a session of their choice.
