Word in Time: Poetry, Narrative, Translation The essays in this volume, written for Arthur Terry and presented to him on the occasion of his 70th birthday, reflect his wide-ranging interest in, and scholarly contribution to, comparative literature during a long and distinguished academic career. Written by leading specialists, these essays explore various effects of the "word in time", that is to say, they demonstrate by means of individual case-studies how significant shifts in focus and orientation, occurring at crucial historical moments from the fifteenth century to the present day, may be revealed through a close examination of key literary works of the period. In the process, new readings are offered of individual poems and prose works originally written in six different languages: English, Spanish, Catalan, French, German and Russian. English translations are not only provided for all the foreign texts discussed, but in several instances they are also used to interpret them. Topics as diverse as Europe's discovery of the New World, the investiture of Romanticism, the constructions of Modernism and its aftermath - post-modernism - are covered. The new disciplines of translation studies, gender studies and film studies, which have come to challenge more traditional approaches within the field of comparative literature, are well represented in these essays. Professor Terry's own erudite, valedictory lecture on "The Strangeness of Spanish Golden Age Poetry" is also included in the volume. Contents:
